FSC Friday at Anglers Country Park

On Friday 25th September Wakefield Council were presented with a certificate to mark their acceptance into the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification scheme.  Forest certification demonstrates that the council's woodlands meet a global standard, addressing the economic, environmental and social aspects of forest management.  Wakefield Council is responsible for more than 700ha of woodland which are managed for timber production, wildlife conservation and public recreation.  The woods are some of the most important greenspace within Wakefield and include ancient woods, woodland regarded as one of the world's first nature reserves and sites of archaeological interest.   Recognising the importance of managing these woodlands to the highest standard the council has undertaken the exacting process of obtaining forest certification with help from the West Yorkshire Working Woodlands Project, run by Yorwoods as part of the Green Infrastructure Programme being delivered by partners of the White Rose Forest, through funding from Yorkshire Forward.

Wakefield Council held a celebratory and educational event at Anglers Country Park, Wintersett on Friday 25th  and Saturday 26th September.  Run in conjunction with the nationwide FSC Friday promotion to raise awareness of the FSC logo as a mark of responsible forestry, the event included demonstrations and exhibitions of a range of woodland and forestry crafts and activities, including willow weaving, pole turning, mobile sawmilling, horse logging and bird and bat box making.   Contact Ben for more details.
