The 2009 Great Yorkshire Show has just finished, a very successful three days for all of the Yorwoods staff involved.

In the Forestry Events Arena, run by Yorwoods on behalf of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, the crowds gathered to watch a huge variety of demonstrations and challenges, with precision felling, Man vs Machine, aerial rescue, sawmilling, chainsaw carving and of course, the Great British Poleclimbing Championships.

A very successful ‘Managing Woodlands for Woodfuel’ course was run at The Smithy at Aske on June 25th.

This one day course covered a wide range of areas of Woodland Management for the production of woodfuels, including management systems; timber quality; site assessments; measurement of timber; harvesting and extraction techniques, storage and seasoning.

At an awards ceremony at London’s Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel on 11th June, Rural Development Initiatives Ltd. (RDI), Yorwoods managing agent, were amongst the short listed nominees for the British Renewable Energy Awards. RDI were nominated in the ‘Pioneer’ category (sponsored by British Sugar) for their work in promoting woodfuel and supporting the supply chain through projects such as Ignite, NewHeat, Ignition09 and bioeNErgy.

North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC), on behalf of the North Yorkshire Timber Freight Quality Partnership, has commissioned a Timber Production Mapping Study to help to inform the selection of the most suitable routes for extraction and how best to manage the consequential effects on the highway network.

Being organised under the auspices of the West Yorkshire Working Woodlands project this course will cover theoretical and management aspects of coppice management.  The course is being run on 12th March and is located north-east of Leeds, starting at Thorner Victory Hall and after lunch will continue at Hetchell Wood. The Zetland Estate has been successful in securing grant intervention through the Yorwoods Woodfuel Infrastructure Programme.  The programme supports the development of the woodfuel supply chain across North Yorkshire, East Riding, City of Hull and York.
